Good Grub

Since the beginning of the new year we’ve had some pretty good meals. Some at h0me and some out. My favorite has been Smoke. I can’t seem to get enough of their pulled hog eggs benedict or their brisket hash. I have yet to try their biscuits and gravy or their heavy handed blueberry ricotta pancakes. I’m sure they are just as good as everything else on the menu.

Other delights include Tukta Thai, Goff’s, Capital Pub, Meddlesome Moth, El Fenix, Good-to-Go Taco, Il Cane Rosso and Houston’s. We’ve been eating well to say the least. I am eager to get back to Good-to-Go. The Trippy Chick and Paris, TX were mighty fine tacos. I pretty much want to try everything that they have to offer on the menu. I can’t imagine that anything would disappoint.

Happy New Year. I still can’t believe 2011 went by so quickly. I guess that is what everyone says as each year passes.Our holidays were fabulous. My husband and I were both off from work. We saw movies and ate out daily. It was great.

I took note of something in particular. The El Fenix at Casa Linda isn’t what it used to be. If I want that same taste that I grew up with I have to go downtown or to the Northwest Highway location. No biggie. Both are close by. That’s good to know. I was getting pretty fed up with the mediocre food at the Casa Linda location.

Okay, so that was totally random, but if you love enchiladas and salsa like I do then it is a pretty big deal.

Here it goes. I love Taco Bueno. I especially like their chicken soft tacos with pico de gallo and salsa. Taco Bell will do in a pinch. That said, I don’t frequent either one on a regular basis. I had Bueno tacos for lunch yesterday and was reminded how much I enjoy their mediocre food.

Pappadeaux

I haven’t been to Pappadeaux since I was in college. It’s possible that it has been longer than that. Junior High maybe? For whatever reason, I had a hankering a few weeks back. I’m so glad we went. In fact,we’ve already been back for a second time.

First off, their portions are huge. I suggest ordering one of their ‘lunch’ entrees. We tried the seafood pasta, sausage and seafood gumbo, Beefsteak tomato salad with blue cheese crumbles, crab cakes and the Mahi Mahi Alexandria.

Our extravaganza was over a duration of two visits. Both times, we left more than enough food on our plates for left overs. If only we had an option to go home afterwards and put our doggy bags in the fridge. All of our entrees were great. The only thing that didn’t live up to the other dishes was the gumbo. Maybe the bisque is where it’s at.

Tradition

I meet this time of year with mixed emotions. I love the holiday season, but at the same time they can be very stressful.

Thanksgiving dinner never starts on time which is fine, but when there is a two hour delay the children get restless. Then we have to pack up early, give our apologies, drive an hour to get home only to realize that we forgot your purse/wallet. No bueno.

Christmas is different. There is definitely more driving on this particular holiday. There are more stops to make. And, why do I always feel guilty when I have to leave one residence to go to another? It’s like I’m betraying someone. There is also a silly little Christmas mystery in my family. It never fails. Someone will cry at or before the big Christmas dinner. It used to be awkward and I guess it still is, but at least we know it’s coming.

Random

This is going to be a quick recap of the past few weeks. We returned to Meddlesome Moth recently and enjoyed our burger and tuna salad. We started with the fried hominy which surprisingly, we had never tried before. Believe me when I tell you to skip this appetizer. No good. It would be better served as a garnish.Next time we are there, we will start with their amazing Thai mussels.

We have had a few meals at Bolsa which never disappoints. That place it so good. I love the atmosphere. It reminds me of Santa Fe. We ate at Oddfellows two weeks ago. I hate to say it, but we thought it was just okay. We didn’t order breakfast items and I think that was our mistake. We should have taken the lead from other diners. It was obvious that breakfast was the winner.

We’ve been picking up a lot of sandwiches from Great Outdoors. Gosh, I love that place. It takes me back to my days in junior high. We’ve also been making a lot of homemade pizza. We’ve been recreating the BBQ chicken pizza from California Pizza Kitchen among others. Pizza is so easy to make and it makes plenty to serve as a single meal or a crowd. The leftovers have been great to heat up the next day for lunch.

This weekend’s Saturday lunch has yet to be determined. We need a TV for the Tech/TX game and some good bar food.

Whiskey Cake

We avoided the TX/OU crowds by heading north last weekend. I had heard good things about Whiskey Cake and wanted to give it a go. I didn’t realize that it was the old Plano Tavern. I work close by and spent many early evenings at the watering hole. The place has since been updated to give more light to the dining area with a bit of a rustic touch. There is a patio now too. Upon our arrival, we opted to sit at the bar (obviously, since there was football to be watched).

We started with the fried green tomatoes. I loved this appetizer; however, I did not care for the dipping sauce alongside. No biggie since the tomatoes were great on their own. They appeared to have been fried in a tempura batter which made them super light and fluffy. For lunch, I had the blue crab cake and my husband had the burger. We loved both. The burger is made of ground brisket. We were skeptical at first thinking that the meat would be tough. Boy were we wrong. The burger was divine. We split an order of the Parmesan fries and stuffed ourselves silly. Mmmm….good.

Angry Dog

One word. Burger. Angry Dog has one hell of a burger. We had lunch there on Saturday. Migs and I were both hankering for some good bar food. Wings were at the top of our list. Angry Dog did not disappoint. We loved everything about the place. The wings were great. We opted for the original with a side of the extra hot sauce on the side. They aren’t kidding. That’s some killer hot sauce. My mouth stayed on fire until our burger order arrived. The burger is the bomb. It’s a half pound patty grilled to perfection served with fries. We left Angry Dog completely satisfied. I love that.

More Smoke

We’ve been on a Smoke repeat for some time now. Every Saturday, we suggest a new restaurant only to find ourselves driving straight to Smoke. We’ve had everything on the brunch menu except for the pancakes and the turkey sandwich. If only we could experience the dinner menu on a Saturday afternoon. Now, that would be nice.

I know that it is still scorching hot outside, but I can feel that Fall is near. In fact, I’ve been hankering for butternut squash and pumpkin pie. I can almost taste Thanksgiving dinner. It will be here before we know it.

For now, the family is going to enjoy the holiday weekend with good food and fun. My husband has requested a key lime pie with a graham cracker crust to carry us through the holiday. I don’t know about you, but that sounds damn good to me. Enjoy the long weekend.
